How to improve mental health by travelling

While travelling is great for meeting new people and making memories, it also helps boost mental health and wellbeing. What’s more, travelling also helps one to recharge and rejuvenate from the stress and bustle of one’s daily life. It has also been found that travelling can also improve ‘cognitive flexibility’ or creativity.

Here are some steps you can get started with

1. Take time to plan

The first step is to start making a list (or a bucket list) of places that you wish to visit. Plan out a budget and the sites you want to see. Planning a trip is in itself an act of self care.

2. Travel with loved ones

Choose a travel companion. It can be a friend, a family member or a partner. If not, solo travelling is a great way to step out of your comfort zone and explore a new place.

3. Stay active

When you are travelling, ensure to include some forms of physical activity into the itinerary. Walking, hiking while enjoying the scenery of a new destination has been proven to be a great way to reduce stress levels.

4. Learn new things

The best part of a trip is new learnings. Travelling gives us the opportunity to increase our awareness and knowledge about new cultural traditions, food or even history.
